The History of Norburn

In the late 1940's Geoff and Helen Smith opened an electrical shop called Norburn Electric in the 4500 block of East Hastings Street in Burnaby. They lived in an apartment above the shop. The Smith's served the community for all types of electrical services including parts, repairs, wiring and maintenance. They eventually acquired three "giraffes" which were used for maintaining street lighting contracts in Burnaby, West Vancouver, North Vancouver and nearby municipalities.

During the 1950's, Norburn Electric did residential, commercial and industrial wiring using Fred Moore Electric and other electric companies. They repaired and rewound motors and also repaired appliances. In 1955, Geoff Smith acquired a machine by which frozen pipes could be thawed out electrically.

In the late 1960's, Norburn Electric expanded and moved to 4600 East Hastings Street. This location was previously a lumberyard. Norburn Electric specialized in selling electric parts, doing repairs, rewinding motors, servicing diving tanks etc. They had a dozen large Verdon fixtures throughout the showroom that came from Gough Electric.

From 1968-69 Thomas Industries from Chicago did a survey on Norburn Electric and discovered that it was an ideal location for at least a 25-year longevity regarding lighting and electric needs for growing communities. In the latter part of 1969, Norburn committed to a new showroom with 75 percent Thomas Industries products. The 3000 sq feet showroom was redone into elegant partitioned rooms featuring Spanish, Mediterranean, Traditional, and Contemporary designed lighting fixtures. It was accented with beautiful furnishings and fine carpets.

In the fall of 1991, B.A. Robinson owned by Bruce and Ross Robinson bought over Norburn from Gescan. The sale was completed October 16, 1991. After major renovations in the showroom and the installations of computers, Norburn once again became successful. In 1998, Norburn became more diversified by adding a bath centre and plumbing accessories.

In 1999, restructuring took place and today Norburn Lighting and Bath Centre is solely owned by Bruce Robinson. Today with Norm Brown as Regional Manager, Norburn continues to be successful.
